What is an interesting part of your job that people might not know?

When teaching students how to play instruments or do dances, I often have to learn them “backwards” so I can mirror for the students.  Otherwise, they would all learn them backwards.  For example, any directions that include left or right, I have to learn the opposite.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Greeting students in the main hall as they enter in the mornings.  Getting hugs and high fives,

How does your job impact students?

It gives them an outlet for expression, for movement, for creativity.  They learn patterns, math, foreign language.  They learn that just because something looks hard doesn’t mean it is.  They learn how to break things down into chunks, learn them and then put them back together to be something beautiful.
When did you start in the  district?
I was offered my first job on my birthday by Harriett Jackson, then principal at West Powellhurst in the summer of 1986.  I had just finished student teaching at Gilbert Heights with Alexa Chittick and the High School with Curtis Holloway.  I started in August of that year.
