Your Local Legislators

The 2013 Oregon State Legislature is now officially in session. During this session, the Legislature will adopt a new budget for the next two years, including for K-12 education.

The Governor has initially proposed a K-12 education budget of $6.15 billion over two years. The David Douglas School District estimates that a budget at that level would leave our District anywhere from $6-$8 million short in funding for next school year. The District has not yet begun to make budget decisions, but for some perspective a cut of $6 million would equate to about 50 teaching positions, or more than 15 school days eliminated from the calendar.

The Governor has also proposed making adjustments to PERS to partially fill the gap, but even if all PERS proposals succeed, it would still leave David Douglas nearly $3-$5 million short next year.

It is estimated that the State Legislature would need to adopt a two-year K-12 education budget of about $6.7 billion just for David Douglas to maintain existing service levels. Over the past three years, the District has already eliminated school librarian positions, as well as more than 100 other classroom teaching positions due to budget cuts. Administrative positions have also been eliminated and many classified support staff had their hours cut, significantly reducing services to students.

We have had several requests for contact information of state legislators whose districts overlap with the David Douglas School District. Below is a list of contacts for our local representatives and state senators.

At the bottom of this article are three additional links. The first is a flyer provided by the David Douglas Education Association with information for teachers about contacting legislators. It includes a list of all state legislators who serve on committees for Education and for Ways and Means. These are key legislators who will shape school funding for the next two years. The second link is to the official Oregon State government website, which provides much more information about the state legislator, the Governor's budget, and more. And finally, with the third link you can follow the actions of the State Legislature this session, as well as contact State Legislators to share your views.
