2009-10 AYP results
The State of Oregon has released its 2009-10 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports, a requirement of the federal No Child Left Behind law that outlines which schools have met goals for student achievement in Language Arts and Math. The state target this year was that at least 60 percent (actually 59 percent in math) of all students in a school either meet or exceed standards in both areas based on state assessments given to students last school year.
Schools that reach those targets, or that showed significant growth over the prior year, have met AYP. Schools where even one group of students -- for instance ESL students or a particular racial group like white students -- do not reach those targets have not met AYP.
While every school is included in the targets, schools that receive federal funds are required by law to take certain actions if they do not meet AYP. These schools are typically called Title I schools, because that is the name of the federal grant that provides them with additional money. Every David Douglas school except the high school is a Title I school.
The good news for David Douglas this year is that every elementary school met AYP. We're especially pleased with Mill Park Elementary, which last year did not meet AYP, but whose staff and students worked diligently this past year and have now met those federal standards. Same story at Alice Ott Middle School, which in 2008-09 did not meet. Alice Ott staff and students turned that around in 2009-10 and this year met AYP. Congratulations to both those schools, and to all our schools who have continued their prior successes.
A chart showing a two year comparison is attached below, and you'll see the improvement of both Mill Park and Alice Ott, as well as the continued success at other schools. You will also see that two of our schools -- Ron Russell Middle School and David Douglas High School -- did not meet AYP. Because Ron Russell is a Title I school and has not met AYP for more than two years in a row, it must offer parents free tutoring or the ability for their students to transfer to another David Douglas middle school.
The David Douglas School District is determined to provide every student the opportunity to achieve at a high level, and that every school will meet AYP targets. This only gets more difficult next year because the federal target for the percentage of students who must meet standards increases from 60 percent to 70 percent.
Our determination to succeed is why the District this year will have what we call PLT Wednesdays. Every Wednesday this year, school will start one hour late for students. Staff will use that hour each week to meet in Professional Learning Teams, to study student achievement data and use that information to make detailed decisions about what standards need to be emphasized and which students need more attention. We believe our PLT late-start Wednesdays will help all of our schools increase student achievement for all, even if they are doing well now. Even the best schools, teachers and students can get better, and that's our goal with PLT Wednesdays.
