Note: Due to the need to cancel group gatherings and activities, the March 18th concert mentioned below has been cancelled.

March is Music in Our Schools Month. This year, the David Douglas community has the great honor and pleasure of being able to celebrate with a free concert by the Oregon Symphony on March 18 at David Douglas High School.

The David Douglas School District has great pride in our strong K-12 music program. Our relationship with the Oregon Symphony is yet another example of the expansive musical opportunities we provide students of all grades.

The upcoming concert is the latest touchstone in the deep musical partnership between the David Douglas School District and the Oregon Symphony. It all began in 2014 when the Oregon Symphony received funds through the “Studio to School Initiative,” an innovative program of the Oregon Community Foundation, which supports members of the Oregon Symphony to provide free, weekly private lessons and mentoring to middle school students in the District.

Additionally, DDSD music specialists and their 2,500 students, in grade 3-5 from the nine District elementary schools, are invited to participate each year in the Oregon Symphony’s Link Up concert curriculum, in which the students prepare to play on recorder and sing repertoire from their seats along with the orchestra at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

Also, smaller breakout groups of Symphony musicians have come into schools over the past few years to perform for students.

The District’s commitment to advancing music education in all grades, thus opening up new and exciting opportunities for students to participate in music, will also be recognized in April at the Oregon Symphony’s Annual Community Concert. We are being awarded the Schnitzer Wonder Award. This award was created in 2015 by Jordan Schnitzer to honor his parents, Harold and Arlene Schnitzer, and their commitment to philanthropy, fairness, opportunity, education and creativity as the heart of a strong and vibrant community. The award honors an individual or organization that builds community through the next generation of artists and/or student musicians.

Our extraordinary music teachers in elementary, middle and high school have built a comprehensive music program that is the envy of Oregon, and we could not be more proud of them, or to have been selected for this honor.

We hope you can come to the free concert, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the David Douglas High School North Gym, 1001 SE 135th Avenue. What a way to celebrate Music in Our Schools Month, with music literally in our schools!
