What’s going on in May?

Community  /  District Information

May is a month full of important celebrations across the David Douglas School District! Here’s what’s happening:

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month

Throughout May, we celebrate the vibrant cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Our schools are proud to recognize and honor the rich diversity that strengthens David Douglas.

This month — and every month — let’s come together to celebrate, honor, and uplift AAPI histories, cultures, and identities.

Did you know that AAPI students make up around 18% of our total student population? That’s over 1,500 students!

We invite you to explore a variety of staff-curated resources that highlight the perspectives and essential contributions of AAPI communities. These materials are designed to foster visibility, belonging, and deeper understanding across our schools.

Please enjoy our AAPI Heritage Month slides created by our Ron Russell Middle School student equity group.

May 3 – School Lunch Hero Day

Today we honor the incredible members of our Nutrition Services team. From early mornings to busy lunch hours, these dedicated professionals ensure that every student receives healthy, nourishing meals that fuel their learning and growth. Their work often goes unseen, but their impact is felt in every school building, every single day.

Thank you for your hard work, care, and the heart you bring to your role. You truly are heroes!

May 6–10 – Teacher Appreciation Week

This week is all about celebrating our extraordinary teachers in David Douglas! Every day, our educators show up with passion, creativity, and deep commitment to helping students learn, grow & thrive!

From sparking curiosity to building confidence, your influence extends far beyond the classroom walls.
Thank you for being champions for our students and for shaping the future with your dedication and care.

May 15 – Speech Pathologist Day

Our wonderful David Douglas Speech-language pathologists are key members of our student support teams, helping students build the communication skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
Their work is often quiet and behind the scenes, but the results are powerful — helping students express themselves, engage with peers, and grow in confidence.
Thank you for your patience, your expertise, and your commitment to empowering every David Douglas student to find their voice.
