Throughout June, the David Douglas School District is recognizing several important celebrations. Here’s what to know:

Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month

June is a time for celebration, reflection, and solidarity with our LGBTQ+ students, families, and staff. As we embrace the vibrant spirit of Pride Month, we also recognize the ongoing challenges the LGBTQ+ community continues to face—and recommit ourselves to the work of advancing equity, belonging, and acceptance for all.

At David Douglas School District, we remain dedicated to upholding our Every Student Belongs policy. This month, we invite our entire community to honor and uplift LGBTQ+ voices by learning, listening, and engaging with compassion and purpose.

David Douglas High School has created a slide deck that highlights key moments in LGBTQ+ history, current challenges, and resources that support education and allyship.

June 19 – Juneteenth

The David Douglas School District honors Juneteenth on June 19 as a significant milestone in American history, symbolizing the end of slavery in the United States. This day marks the delayed fulfillment of the Emancipation Proclamation—a historic order issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that declared all enslaved people in Confederate states to be free.

Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day,” became an official federal holiday in 2021. For many in the Black community, it is viewed as a true Independence Day—honoring the enduring struggle for freedom, justice, and equality.

Juneteenth offers an opportunity to honor the experiences of those who endured slavery and to reaffirm our commitment to a future where freedom and equality are upheld for all. It also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and the resilience of the Black community. For our entire DDSD family, it’s a time to reflect on our shared history, recognize the profound contributions of Black Americans, and renew our dedication to advancing racial equity.

We invite everyone to explore the presentation created by the Ventura Park Equity Team to learn more about the importance of this day.We invite everyone to explore the presentation created by the Ventura Park Equity Team to learn more about the importance of this day.
