This October, the David Douglas School District is highlighting several important celebrations. Here’s an overview:
Filipino American History Month (FAHM)
The David Douglas School District is proud to honor and celebrate our Filipino American staff, students, and community members this October during Filipino American History Month (FAHM).
FAHM recognizes the rich heritage and countless contributions of Filipino Americans to our nation’s history and culture. The month traces its roots to October 18, 1587, when the first Filipinos arrived in what is now Morro Bay, California.
The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) first introduced FAHM in 1992 to highlight the vital role Filipino Americans have played in shaping the United States. In 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as a time to celebrate the history, legacy, and achievements of the Filipino American community.
We invite everyone to join us in honoring and celebrating the cultural richness and vibrant contributions of our Filipino American community, both within our district and across the nation.
National Bullying Prevention Month
This month, the David Douglas School District joins schools nationwide in raising awareness about the lasting impact of bullying. Since 2006, this campaign has brought communities together to promote kindness, respect, and inclusion.
Bullying can take many forms and may lead to school avoidance, low self-esteem, and anxiety. By addressing these challenges, we reaffirm our commitment to creating safe, supportive schools where every student feels valued and respected.
Working together with families, we strive to build safe, kind, and welcoming environments for all. We encourage you to talk at home about kindness, respect, and the ways we can all help prevent bullying. And remember: you are never alone. If you need support, please reach out to your teachers, school staff, or district resources. We are here, and we care.
October 2 – School Custodian Appreciation Day
Our custodians play a vital role in keeping our schools safe, clean, and welcoming for students, staff, and families every day. Their hard work and dedication help create the environment where our students can learn and grow. Please join us in thanking our custodial teams for all they do to support our schools and community.
October 13 – Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday in the United States that celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October, and is an official city and state holiday in various localities.
At David Douglas, we are committed to continually uplifting and recognizing our students and families in all their diversity. We acknowledge the added strength, joy, and creativity that this diversity brings to our schools.
This month, we are specifically turning our attention to the history and extraordinary resilience of the Indigenous Peoples in our midst. We recognize their thriving presence while also acknowledging the painful realities and traumas they have endured.
The path toward healing and wholeness for our collective community requires honesty in our storytelling and a clear acknowledgment of both the good and the places where we, as a society, have gotten it wrong.
We invite the entire David Douglas community to join us in fostering an honest, inclusive, and enriching learning environment for everyone.

October 6 – National Coach Day
Let’s celebrate the coaches who motivate and guide our students every day. Through their dedication, encouragement, and leadership, coaches help students build confidence, teamwork, and resilience. We appreciate all of our coaches for the positive influence they have on our students and our school community.
National Principals Month
We celebrate the outstanding leadership and dedication of our principals. Principals play a vital role in creating safe, welcoming, and inspiring learning environments for students, staff, and families. In David Douglas, we are fortunate to have an exceptional team of principals, along with vice principals and assistant principals, who are also part of this celebration. We thank our school leaders for their commitment, guidance, and tireless efforts to support the success and well-being of every student.
