Faces of David Douglas – April 2017

Employee: Dottie Miller
Job: Family and Consumer Studies Teacher
Works at the David Douglas High School – South Campus
Started with David Douglas in September 1992

What is an interesting part of your job that people might not know?

People may not know that I teach and administer the Multnomah County Food Handlers Card Test.  Not only do my students have to follow my rules, but also food safety standards, and OSHA rules apply in my classroom.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The best days that I have experienced in running the student restaurant are when all the students have loads of cooking and tasks to do.  I am just the errand girl and/or the helper.  The kids are busy and working together.  Yep, those are my happiest days!

How does your job impact students?

I believe that I am giving students an authentic experience.  I owe much of this to my mentor, Katherine Lam.  She is an entrepreneur and owner of several restaurants in the PDX area and along the West Coast.  With her help, I think the Kilt is a little “taste” of the food biz tailored for the DDHS students.
Where else have you worked in the  district?
I have bled tartan for many, many years!!  Douglas has been my home since 1992.  Prior to that, I have taught in Texas and Louisiana.  The educational systems in all three states have their strengths and struggles, but the experience students receive in the Douglas school system is second to none.
