David Douglas music teacher Jennifer Brooks-Muller has been selected to chair the committee that governs high school music programs throughout the United States. Brooks-Muller, who began teaching at David Douglas High School in 1998, is now the Chair of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Music Committee.
The NFHS is the governing body for national high school athletics and activities, including music.
This summer, she finished a 4-year term on the Northwest regional committee of the NFHS. Shortly after her term ended, the Oregon School Activities Association asked her to apply for the vacant Chair of the NFHS Music Committee. Brooks-Muller was selected from a pool of applicants.
Her first duty was to give a presentation about providing excellent music education in a low-income school at the annual NFHS Conference in Indianapolis. It’s a subject she knows well, as David Douglas has long been recognized for its strong music programs. For the past 8 years, the District has received a ‘Best Communities for Music Education’ Award from the National Association of Music Merchants.
Brooks-Muller wears a number of hats at DDHS. In addition to her music teaching duties, she is the Head Band Director, Musical Vocal and Orchestra Director, and the Stage/Jazz Band Director.
