Meet our new School Board Member! The School Board has appointed Donna Barber to Position 1 of our School Board. She will be sworn into office during the Nov. 8 Board meeting.

Donna is the parent of students attending Fir Ridge, David Douglas High School and Alice Ott Middle School. She brings more than 25 years experience working in youth development and is currently the Director of Champions Academy, an initiative of the Portland Leadership Foundation.

A lifelong educator with degrees in Communication and Education, she has served on PTAs, Site Councils and with the Scouts. Donna wrote in her application: “I am an educator and concerned citizen with a passion for developing leaders among urban youth. I am also a parent of black and brown children and am equally driven to provide them with an education that recognizes their unique history, beauty, strengths and abilities, and to influence and support the work of creating an education system that allows and encourages all children to succeed.”

She also makes history as the first African American to serve on the District’s School Board since our founding nearly 60 years ago.

She will replace Board Member Ana del Rocio, who announced her resignation last month, and will serve until May, 2019, when she will run for election for the seat.

Please join us in welcoming Donna Barber to our School Board.
