Dear Parents and Guardians,

At David Douglas High School we are committed to the health and safety of our students.  We have taken a proactive approach to make our school as safe as possible. We would like to take this opportunity to share some different resources and actions we are taking to fulfill this commitment.

1. Relationship with the Portland Police Bureau

  • Assisting with Lock-In drills – over 25 police officers will be at DDHS on March 12th to assist with a Lock-In drill
  • Monthly Meetings with Commander and Lieutenant of East Precinct
  • Officers have toured buildings to become familiar with layout
  • Officers are present when requested for large gatherings
  • East precinct houses a school radio for immediate assistance if needed
  • Our School Resource Officers are our greatest safety resource – two are assigned to our school and provide assistance such as giving students rides home, helping parents new to our country with legal questions and presenting to drivers education, Career and Health classes

2. Security/Administrative Team

  • DDHS has five security officers with a combined 50 years of experience
  • Student safety and helping students with issues they face in today’s world are their main goal
  • Security officers act as a safety net around our school
  • Two administrators devote much of their time to school safety – attending workshops and drills to continually update procedures

3. Emergency Drills

  • Monthly fire drills
  • Quarterly Active Shooter drills with Police assistance
  • Bi-yearly Earthquake drills

4. Partnering with Parents/Guardians for school safety

  • Taking every threat seriously, even if thought to be a “joke” or “prank”
  • Staying connected and monitoring your student’s social media activities, making sure they understand what they post is public and permanent
  • Reaching out for help if you see behavior indicative of self-harm or harm to others from either Police or another professional Saying something if you see or hear something that does not seem right

Our school and students safety is everyone’s responsibility!
