Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Hoa Nguyen, our new David Douglas School Board member. Nguyen won the May 18 election to Position 3 on the Board and will take office July 8, the first scheduled Board meeting of the new term.

She replaces Christine Larsen, who did not run for re-election. We thank Christine for giving 8 years of service as a Board member to the students, families and staff of the David Douglas School District.

Congratulations as well to Board Chair Andrea Valderrama and current Board members Donna Barber and Stephanie Stephens who each were re-elected to new terms. The terms of Vice Chair Sahar Muranovic and Board members Aaron Barrow and Frieda Christopher were not on the ballot this year. Their current terms expire in 2023.

Hoa Nguyen currently works as a School Attendance Coach for Portland Public Schools, providing the David Douglas Board with someone who has direct experience working closely with students and families.

A 2nd generation Vietnamese-American, Nguyen was born in New Orleans before her family moved to Portland. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy. She received her BA in Sociology from Portland State University.

Nguyen has worked in non-profits and PPS as a Youth and Family Advocate, Educational Assistant, & SUN Community School Coordinator. She has also served as Co-Chair of the Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC).
