SMART Reading is a literacy nonprofit committed to sparking joy through the magic of a shared book. The program concept is simple: pair an adult volunteer with a child for weekly shared reading sessions and provide children with books to keep. Volunteers model the joy of reading while supporting the child’s efforts to read independently. SMART is seeking volunteers to provide in-person reading support to kids this fall at Earl Boyles Elementary, Gilbert Heights, Lincoln Park Elementary, and Menlo Park Elementary.
After two years of virtual programming, SMART is excited to begin offering in-person volunteer opportunities alongside the virtual adaptations created during the pandemic. They’re launching campaigns statewide to rebuild by recruiting various kinds of volunteers and I’m hoping you can help us spread the word. Specifically, SMART Reading is recruiting Volunteer Site Coordinators and Readers.

Site Coordinators are leadership volunteers who are vital to the success of the organization’s programs. Site Coordinators provide program oversight during reading sessions, act as a key point of contact at SMART schools, and create a welcoming, organized environment for volunteer Readers and students. This role is an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the lives of both adult volunteers and students when they need the support more than ever. Read more about the Site Coordinator role here.
Volunteer Readers help foster reading motivation and enjoyment by providing fun, child-centered reading sessions. Our volunteers read one-on-one with students or lead read-alouds with entire classrooms. Read more about the Reader role here.
