It’s National Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month! We are excited to recognize our amazing Latinx/Hispanic community and invite you to join in the celebration.
The David Douglas School District will celebrate and honor the legacy of Latinx Americans during Latinx/Hispanic Heritage recognition month. Spanish is the home language for approximately 1500 students’ in DDSD. Our most recent ethnicity report data for the District indicates that 28% of our students identify as Latinx/Hispanic.
Our District Strategic Plan, has a specific focus on Heritage Celebrations and as a District we know these celebrations are a great way to highlight the diverse cultures represented in our DDSD community.
Focus Area 1: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
David Douglas Schools value and respect the diversity, equity, and inclusion of all students, staff, and community members.
Equity Statement: All students, staff and community members – regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status, socioeconomic status, and/ or zip code – deserve an excellent, culturally and linguistically relevant education that include opportunities to help them achieve their full potential.
As we elevate National Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15th to October 15th, we hope you will join us in learning more about Hispanic and Latinx cultures. While we prioritize this recognition and celebration in our classrooms and schools this month, we also strive to ensure our instruction and cultural understanding work is embedded throughout the year and not just during one designated month of recognition.
Our District continues to be engaged in equity work to ensure that all students are welcomed, safe, supported, and have opportunities to see their cultures represented and celebrated in the classroom in order to increase their confidence and identities as learners.
The David Douglas School Board has adopted a proclamation recognizing Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. Take a moment to read this proclamation linked below.
