Our very own, an inspiring Art and CTE teacher at Fir Ridge Campus, Michelle Colbert, has won the OnPoint Prize Educator of the Year Award for grades 9-12. Michelle uses art to empower youth, encouraging them to amplify their voices and express themselves in a supportive environment. After the pandemic, she invited students to create mixed-media self-portraits, offering a window into their experiences during that challenging time. Students gain confidence and skills in her industrial arts class by designing and manufacturing skateboards from scratch.

Michelle’s influence extends beyond the classroom through partnerships and community projects. She collaborates with Nike’s Inventors Club and the School to Work program, connecting students with professionals in various fields. One standout initiative, the “Our Space of Possibilities” project, engaged students in public art, including designing a Trimet bus wrap and creating an Afrofuturism-themed installation. Michelle also leads the Art and AV clubs, organizes the annual Fir Ridge Art Showcase, and spearheaded the first Career and Technical Education Pathways Program.

We are incredibly proud of Michelle’s dedication to our students and innovative education approach. Please join us in celebrating her and her tremendous impact on our community.
