District Seeks School Board Applicants

During our regular June David Douglas School District Board Meeting on Thursday, June 13th, Board member Donna Barber announced her resignation from Board Position 1, effective June 23rd, 2024. “I have truly felt privileged and honored to serve the district,” said Board member Donna Barber. 

The Board also announced a delay in selecting a new Board member. This decision is based on concerns about the rushed process and the possibility that the application message may have been overlooked during the busy end-of-year activities and graduation ceremonies, resulting in a small number of applicants.  

Due to the delay, the presentations of the current applicants were paused. The application window for Board Position 1 will reopen today, June 18, and remain open until August 2. 

• Both current and new applicants will present to the School Board on August 8th.

One year remains in the current term of office for Position 1 and expires in June 2025. The applicant selected by the Board will be sworn in on September 12. 

• By Board Policy, the appointed Board member will serve until June 2025, which is the next election year. An election will be held in May 2025, and the winner of that election will begin a new four-year term starting July 1, 2025.

Requirements to apply:

• Must be a resident of the David Douglas School District for at least one full year
• Must be a citizen and registered voter

Application deadline: 

• Submit an application form by 5 pm on Friday, August 2.

Applicants will be asked to give a 5-minute presentation to the Board during its August 8th Board meeting, which begins at 7 pm at David Douglas School District Boardroom, 1500 SE 130th Ave. Based on the application forms and the presentations, the Board will select a replacement on September 12th.
