Juneteenth 2024

Community

At the David Douglas School District, we recognize Juneteenth on June 19th as a pivotal moment in American history, marking the end of slavery. This day commemorates the abolition of slavery, which took place more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln declared all enslaved persons free.

Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day,” was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. Many within the Black community consider this day as Independence Day, symbolizing the long and arduous journey toward freedom and equality.

Understanding and acknowledging this history accurately is crucial in creating a more inclusive and informed community. By celebrating Juneteenth, we honor the experiences of those who lived through this period and commit to a future where freedom and equality are fundamental rights for everyone. Our team at Ventura Park Elementary has prepared a slideshow providing historical information about Juneteenth and its significance.
