Monday, January 20, 2025, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day observed every third Monday of January to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. His tireless efforts were instrumental in paving the way for the civil rights movement and creating a vision of justice and equality.
The David Douglas School District proudly recognizes and champions Dr. King’s contributions to building a more inclusive society. His relentless fight for the rights of the African American community remains a cornerstone of the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.
Without Dr. King’s leadership, landmark achievements like the Civil Rights Act of 1964—which prohibits discrimination in public schools and spaces—might not have been realized. Yet, Dr. King’s work is far from complete. It is up to all of us to continue striving toward the dream he so eloquently shared.
As part of our commitment to advancing Dr. King’s vision, the David Douglas School District has developed an Equity Plan that outlines our dedication to equity and inclusion.
Goals of the Equity Plan:
- Equitable Outcomes: Ensure that outcomes for students of color are not predictable by race or ethnicity, reflecting our commitment to fairness and opportunity for all.
- Welcoming Schools: Foster school environments where every student feels safe, valued, and respected, with their identities celebrated.
- Community Engagement: Promote open communication and meaningful dialogue with families and communities of color.
- Accountability and Transparency: Establish clear mechanisms for monitoring and advancing equity across the district.
