School Board Appreciation Month

January is School Board Appreciation Month, recognizing the critical role our School Board members play in the David Douglas community.

Our board members spend significant time analyzing complex issues and making far-reaching policy decisions. They support programs that directly help students explore their interests and plan for their futures. Their vital leadership provides the foundation for our students to Learn, Grow, and Thrive. We thank them for their unwavering commitment to our schools and public education.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – January 19

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed this month, honoring a leader who championed justice and access to education for all. Dr. King’s advocacy was instrumental in securing key milestones, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination in public schools and public places.

While we celebrate the progress made, we recognize that the vital work of achieving a more just world continues. David Douglas School District is committed to advancing Dr. King’s dream through our Equity Plan. This plan is our mechanism to ensure equitable outcomes for students of color, to guarantee that every student feels safe and valued, and to provide transparency in our progress toward equity.

For details on our mission to ensure outcomes are not predictable by race, please visit the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department webpage.

Dr. Charlene Williams, Director of the Oregon Department of Education, recently shared a reminder that resonates deeply with our mission:

“2025 was rife with moments of stress, worry, uncertainty, and, for many, exhaustion and despair. Unfortunately, for countless people in our communities, 2026 has begun with a similar mix of heavy emotions. However, I would urge you to continue to believe in humanity’s ability to overcome injustice and to heed Dr. King’s call to action, not only in our communities, but in ourselves. I believe that in this moment, he would want to remind us that while disappointment is finite, we must ‘never lose infinite hope.’”
