September 8 – International Literacy Day

Celebrated globally, International Literacy Day highlights the essential power of reading and writing. The United Nations recognizes literacy not just as an educational goal, but as a fundamental human right.

Literacy extends well beyond the classroom. It is more than completing a required reading assignment or passing a spelling quiz; it is a way to explore new perspectives, share our unique stories, and engage deeply with the world around us.

September 13 – Grandparents Day

For many families, grandparents are more than just a source of wisdom and treasured stories. They are essential caregivers and trustworthy supporters. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all the grandparents who play so many special roles in our lives.

If you are a grandparent in David Douglas and would like to volunteer in our schools, please visit your school office to begin the volunteer process.

Please also visit our Volunteer Procedures page for more information.

September 14 to 18 – Community Schools Coordinators Week

We are celebrating our SUN Site Managers for their daily dedication to helping students and families thrive.

Our SUN managers are committed to our students and community. They partner with schools every day to ensure students can learn, grow, and thrive through integrated support, family and community engagement, collaboration, and enrichment opportunities.

September 15 to October 15 – Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a dedicated time to honor the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and lasting contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

While this month offers a special opportunity to celebrate and recognize Hispanic culture, art, music, and leadership, it does not end on October 15. Hispanic and Latino heritage shapes our school and local community every single day of the year.
