Community Memo Message Below:

Dear David Douglas School District Community,

In response to recent federal discussions concerning schools and the expressed concerns of many community members regarding our students, we reiterate the unwavering dedication of the David Douglas School District to serving and supporting all members of our school community. This includes students and families of diverse backgrounds, such as different races, religions, languages, abilities, immigrant and refugee families, and LGBTQ+ communities.

Belonging and inclusion have long been cherished values in our community, forming the foundation of our district’s equity and strategic plan. DDSD is committed to nurturing an inclusive environment where students, staff, caregivers, and families feel secure, respected, and appreciated. We embrace the richness of diversity within our school community and view it as a source of strength. We firmly believe that every child has a place and deserves a welcoming school environment conducive to learning and growth.

In our district, discrimination has no place, and we are dedicated to promoting the success and diversity of every student across all aspects of their educational journey.

As outlined in our Equity Plan, we believe that every student, staff member, and community member, regardless of various factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status, socio-economic status, or zip code, deserves a culturally and linguistically relevant education that offers opportunities for realizing their full potential.

It is essential to note that Oregon laws related to schools have not changed. Our DDSD policies and practices concerning equal opportunity, educational equity, non-discrimination, anti-bullying, inclusivity, and other board policies align with Oregon state law. While recent federal actions have sparked questions, we are diligently monitoring each new directive, policy, and action to evaluate their potential impacts on schools, students, and staff.

Our District remains committed to:

  • Adhering to all Oregon laws to ensure access, inclusivity, and belonging for every member of our school community.
  • Implementing programs that address the academic, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of our students.
  • Engaging with families from diverse demographic and linguistic backgrounds to ensure that all voices are heard.
  • Applying an equity-focused approach in decision-making to eliminate obstacles and facilitate success for every student.

The David Douglas School District stands strong due to our relentless dedication to students, the outstanding efforts of our staff, and the support of families, caregivers, and community members. We will continue to prioritize the well-being of our students, ensuring they have a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive. We are committed to creating learning spaces where every David Douglas student feels a sense of belonging and is valued.
